AI Evaluator Pay in 2026: Why Rates Vary So Much
Compare published AI training rates with realistic context about expertise, project availability, unpaid time, and individual earnings.
Search results often reduce AI evaluator pay to one attractive hourly number. The reality is less simple. This market includes short annotation tasks, recurring evaluation projects, language work, coding, and highly specialized professional review. It also mixes advertised rates, contractor payments, annual salaries, and individual screenshots that measure different things.
Last source review: October 23, 2026. All figures below are in U.S. dollars.
There is no single AI evaluator salary
The strongest broad-market evidence shows a divided market. Deel reports that AI trainer roles grew 283% in cross-border hiring during 2025. Its published breakdown says 30.3% of AI trainers earned $15–$20 per hour, 19.1% earned $50–$75, and 6.1% earned $100 or more. The category covers basic annotators and subject-matter experts, so one average conceals more than it explains. See Deel's analysis.
Current official platform material illustrates that spread:
| Published example | What the source actually says |
|---|---|
| DataAnnotation | Project pay typically starts at $20/hour; rates vary by project. Official FAQ |
| Mercor finance projects | Recent opportunities range from $50 to $180/hour depending on specialization and complexity. Official finance page |
| Micro1 field-recording work | A current trade-work example lists $20–$30/hour for approved work. Official opportunity page |
These are published rates, not promises of acceptance, task supply, or monthly income.
Advertised rate is not earned income
An hourly rate answers only one question: what may be paid for approved time or output? Actual income also depends on:
- whether the worker is eligible by country and specialty;
- passing any assessment and quality review;
- the number of tasks released;
- how much work is accepted and billable;
- pauses, cancellations, and project duration;
- unpaid research, onboarding, waiting, or correction time;
- exchange rates, platform fees, and taxes.
A $100/hour project with two available hours produces less gross income than a stable $25/hour project with twenty available hours. Neither rate should be converted into an annual salary unless a source describes a salaried, full-time position.
Why specialist work can pay more
Specialist evaluation requires judgment that is hard to substitute. Finance, law, medicine, software engineering, mathematics, and advanced sciences may require credentials or substantial professional experience. Mercor's finance page, for example, describes reviewing models, assumptions, accounting treatment, risk, and professional-quality analysis—not generic prompt writing.
Higher rates therefore tend to reflect a narrower pool of eligible reviewers and more consequential errors. They do not imply that a beginner can reach the same rate by learning a few prompts.
At the other end, data collection, transcription, labeling, and general rating can have lower barriers to entry but may be more exposed to regional pricing and fluctuating task volume.
How to interpret individual earnings screenshots
A payout dashboard can document that a particular account received or accumulated a stated amount. It cannot establish a typical result without additional context.
Before drawing a conclusion, ask:
- Is the amount lifetime, monthly, pending, or already paid?
- What dates and hours does it cover?
- Is it one project or several?
- What expertise and location were required?
- Is the figure gross, before taxes and expenses?
- Can the source and permission to publish it be verified?
AI Work Prep will label any future contributor screenshot as an individual example, state whether it was independently verified, and separate opportunity listings from completed payouts. Exceptional results will never be presented as an average.
A better way to compare opportunities
Use effective return, not the headline rate alone:
approved gross pay
minus fees and direct costs
divided by total time spent
Then evaluate stability, payment risk, privacy, contract terms, and the professional value of the experience. Record advertised and realized figures separately.
